What Is a Syndet Bar? Soap-Free Cleansing Explained

A syndet bar can look almost identical to a bar of soap, but the two products are built from different cleansing chemistry.

Syndet is short for synthetic detergent. In cosmetics, that simply means the primary cleansing action comes from surfactants other than traditional soap salts. The word “synthetic” can sound harsh, but it tells you how the cleanser is classified—not whether it is mild or aggressive.

How traditional soap is made

The FDA explains that ordinary soap is made by combining fats or oils with an alkali such as lye. The reaction creates alkali salts of fatty acids—the cleansing material we call soap. Traditional soap is normally alkaline. Reviews of skin-cleansing research commonly place it around pH 8.5–11.

How a syndet bar is different

A syndet bar uses non-soap surfactants for cleansing. Because formulators are not locked into traditional soap chemistry, they have more flexibility to control pH, lather, cleansing strength, conditioning ingredients, and sensory feel.

Published reviews generally find that well-formulated mild syndets can cause less barrier disturbance than harsh alkaline soaps, particularly for dry or sensitive skin. Why does pH come up so often?

The skin surface is mildly acidic. Traditional soap is alkaline. A syndet can be formulated closer to the skin’s native pH, which is one reason syndets are common in products made for dry or sensitive skin.

A 2024 study of 250 marketed cleansers found that all tested soaps were highly alkaline, while syndets had a much wider range of pH values. That reinforces the need to look at the actual formula rather than assume every syndet is acidic. (PubMed)

What is HARP®?

Is a syndet the same as liquid body wash?

Not necessarily. “Syndet” describes the cleansing chemistry, not the physical format. A syndet can be liquid or solid. Likewise, a solid bar can be traditional soap or a syndet bar.

For shoppers, that means appearance is not enough. Two bars sitting next to each other can have very different chemistry.

Soap: cleansing action primarily from alkali salts of fatty acids produced by saponification.

Syndet: cleansing action primarily from non-soap surfactants, giving formulators more control over pH and performance.
