The chemistry, without the jargon

Soap and a syndet bar are not the same thing.

They can look similar in your hand, but they are created through different chemistry and behave differently on skin.

Oils or fats are combined with lye. The reaction converts them into soap salts. Even when a properly made bar contains no active lye, the finished soap remains naturally alkaline—commonly around pH 9–11.

  • Can leave dry or sensitive skin feeling tight after washing
  • “Natural,” handmade, or expensive does not change the underlying soap chemistry

Built as a 100% syndet cleanser

HARP uses a modern cleansing system led by Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate rather than saponified oils. This allows the finished bar to be formulated in the skin-compatible pH range of 5.0–6.0.

An important distinction: properly formulated traditional soap should not contain unreacted lye. The difference is that the finished material is still soap, and soap is inherently alkaline. HARP avoids that chemistry entirely by using a syndet cleansing base.

Why pH matters

Healthy skin is naturally a little acidic.

Your skin’s surface is often called the acid mantle. A cleanser does not need to match one exact number, but a pH-balanced formula can be a more comfortable choice than a strongly alkaline soap—particularly for people who regularly experience dryness or tightness.

Look at the first ingredients

Names beginning with “sodium” can mean many things. Sodium cocoate, sodium palmate, and sodium tallowate are soaps. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a syndet surfactant.

Do not rely on price or packaging

A rustic handmade bar and a luxury boxed bar can use the same saponified cleansing base. Price, scent, and branding do not determine pH.

Ask what the bar actually is

Words such as “beauty bar” or “cleansing bar” are not enough by themselves. Look for a clearly stated soap-free syndet base and a finished pH range.
