Soap and syndet bars can look nearly identical in the shower, but they are not interchangeable from a formulation standpoint. The difference begins with the material that performs the cleansing.
This article summarizes published research in plain English and separates class-level evidence about soaps and syndets from claims that would require testing of a specific finished product.
Traditional soap: alkali salts of fatty acids
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that ordinary soap is made by combining fats or oils with an alkali such as lye. The reaction creates alkali salts of fatty acids. Properly made finished soap should not contain excess lye, but the resulting soap is characteristically alkaline. (FDA: Frequently Asked Questions on Soap)
Syndet: a non-soap surfactant system
Syndet is short for synthetic detergent. A syndet cleanser uses non-soap surfactants for its cleansing action. This gives formulators more flexibility to control pH and the way the surfactant system interacts with skin.
A 2022 review in the peer-reviewed journal Dermatology and Therapy describes soap as typically having a pH around 8.5–11 and syndets as commonly falling closer to mildly acidic or neutral ranges. The authors review evidence linking harsh alkaline cleansing with pH alteration, lipid removal, and barrier disruption, while describing well-designed mild syndets as generally more compatible with the skin barrier. What studies in sensitive skin have found
Published clinical work has evaluated mild syndet cleansers in people with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis. One 28-day study of 50 subjects with mild atopic dermatitis found that use of the tested syndet bars was compatible with their treatment regimen and was associated with maintained hydration and improvement in measured skin condition. Another review of clinical trials concluded that mild synthetic-surfactant cleansers and/or emollient-containing cleansers that minimize barrier perturbation can be useful in the daily care of patients with compromised skin. (PubMed: Role of mild cleansing in management of patient skin)
What newer pH testing adds
A 2024 study measured 250 marketed cleansers. All 37 soaps tested were highly alkaline. Syndet products varied substantially, which is a reminder that “syndet” is a category, not a guarantee that every formula has an acidic pH or the same mildness. (PubMed)
Why pH alone is not enough
It would be an oversimplification to say “low pH equals gentle” or “syndet equals gentle.” Surfactant type, surfactant concentration, micelle behavior, fragrance, preservatives, emollients, exposure time, water temperature, and the person’s own skin all affect tolerability.
The strongest conclusion supported by the literature is narrower: formulators can build mild syndet systems that are closer to skin pH and less disruptive than harsh alkaline soap systems. That does not mean every syndet is better than every soap for every person.
How HARP® relates to that research
HARP® is a soap-free, 100% syndet body wash bar formulated at pH 5.0–6.0. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is the primary surfactant in the cleansing base.
Those product attributes place HARP in the category of cleanser chemistry discussed in the research above. However, the cited studies did not test HARP®. It would be inappropriate to take outcomes from another syndet formula and present them as clinical proof of HARP’s performance.
What we can say accurately is that HARP’s formulation strategy—soap-free syndet cleansing at a skin-friendly pH—is consistent with principles widely discussed in dermatology literature on mild cleansing.
The bottom line
Soap and syndet are not marketing synonyms. They are different cleansing systems. For people who experience dryness or tightness from traditional soap, a well-formulated syndet is a scientifically reasonable alternative.
